Voices of Fibromyalgia (poem)

Fibromyalgia, Fibro Fog, Fibro Pain

“Show me where it hurts” you say?
Well, tell me, have you got all day?
Head, shoulders, knees and toes,
The pain it stays, it never goes.
Hips, back, fingers and gut,
Fibro is an actual pain in the butt.

Insomnia keeps her up at night,
Then all day long, it’s sleep she fights.
Fibro-fog’s the funnest part,
She forgets what she’s doing before she starts.

Is this fibro-diagnosis junk?
Is she just in some sort of funk?
Is all the pain inside her head?
Maybe she should try this or that instead?
Until you’ve held spoons in your hand,
Then you cannot begin to understand.

Invisible, her illness may be,
But watch her closely and you will see.
She cringes when she moves, stands or walks.
Her face hurts whenever she eats or talks.
She conserves energy however she can.
Her good moments are a flash in the pan.

Gluten-free is the way to be?
She doesn’t have the time or the money.
She wants to be healthy and eat right,
But her budget is already way too tight.
Sugar and caffeine are bad they say.
When she’s dead, you can take those away.

When you can’t work and have to prove you’re sick,
What others see is what makes her tick.
Especially when she feels okay,
She struggles with guilt for feeling that way.

Her hair, her clothes, her house might be a mess.
She’s got too much anxiety and too much stress.
Whenever she manages to take a shower,
Rest and recovery takes an hour.

Every activity is well thought out,
Even then, there is always doubt.
What if she starts to hurt half way through?
How long does she rest before she can continue?
What if she needs more than a short nap?
What if she still feels like crap?

There is a storm coming in day after tomorrow,
The pain starts today and the fatigue will follow.
No matter the temperature, no matter how nice,
She does way too much and pays for it twice.
She needs to move to a climate with nary a storm,
Where the sun is always shining and it’s always warm.

She could go on and on about all this crap,
But she’s starting to yawn and it’s time for her nap.”
